We’ve posted before on the topic of carbon and concrete, and it is a ‘hot’ topic indeed (pun intended). Concrete is the single most ubiquitous material currently used in construction, second only to water, and its use is not subsiding. Cement, which is the carbon intensive component in concrete, is expected to see a global demand increase by 48 percent from 4.2 billion to 6.2 billion tons by 2050. A sobering statistic is that China’s recent construction boom had that nation using more concrete between 2011 and 2013 than did the United States in the entire 20th century. This article by the Rocky Mountain Institute is a good one exploring this topic and the steps being taken to address this critical aspect of the building industry’s carbon footprint. https://bit.ly/4j5vQrd
