As a follow up to our post from yesterday, why is reducing the use of concrete important? Because the creation of cement–the “glue” that holds concrete together–is one of the most carbon emission intensive materials we use in construction. Concrete is so widely used in construction that there is only one material on Earth we use more of: water! The cement industry is responsible for 8% of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions. But what if we could change that? Well, we are! San Jose-based startup Fortera is one of several emerging companies that are developing new cement production processes that actually absorb carbon dioxide rather than emitting it! It has been said that technology and profit motive have gotten us into this ecological mess we are in… and that is the same thing that is going to get us out of it. This is exciting! https://tinyurl.com/35y2k6m3
