OK and now for the big reveal. Drum roll please… the correct answer is: Rainscreen Assembly. Yes, what you are seeing is the supporting infrastructure for a pressure-equalized rainscreen water management wall assembly. It might come as a shock to some, but the siding on your home is not actually what keeps you dry, that job is done by what is called the weather resistant barrier, or WRB, also known as the house wrap, that white stuff (typically) you may recall seeing on buildings under construction. But we need a first line of defense against the weather and the elements, that is what the siding does. In a pressure-equalized rain screen we provide an air space behind the siding that both allows for drainage and drying for the water that gets behind the siding. In this case for Jeff and Izzy we have vertical siding, so we are running horizontal furring strips on top of vertical furring strips: hence the “lattice” effect. And for you building science nerds out there (like us) https://tinyurl.com/4w4c9jjk. Now you know!
