One component of our ‘Lake of Verdant Peace’ residence project in Kalamazoo that is seeking Living Building Challenge Core certification is the requirement to implement Biophilia. Biophilia, a term coined by the Harvard naturalist Dr. Edward O. Wilson, literally translated, means a love of life or living things. For LBC certification we are invited to look to nature for Biophilic design and programming inspiration. The first step is to become aware of the historical and current natural ecosystems in the region we are building. Here, led by Shannan and Susan, the team at Insight Design, we are learning about just that at the Chipman Preserve. Who knew the design of a home could be influenced by a hike in the woods!
