Following up on our earlier post celebrating our most recent award-winning project, Harvey and Kay’s “Pleasant Future Vision” PHIUS+ Zero certified passive house home, we continue to take you behind the scenes revealing some of the high performance design strategies employed on this amazing project. In this post we are sharing the “design for living” strategy that we at AR feel is a foundational component of sustainable design. When we think about true, deep sustainability we have to consider what is called the life cycle analysis of every aspect of our green homes. Life cycle analysis looks at the total planetary impact from harvesting of raw materials, to processing, to fabrication and manufacturing, to assembly, to use and maintenance, to end of life accommodation. But for us at AR that doesn’t stop at materials, it extends to the very design of the home itself. How truly sustainable is a home that only serves our clients while they are able-bodied? A powerful sustainability concept is “long life, loose fit”. Having a home that is designed to serve our clients no matter what their physical mobility extends the home’s useful life cycle and derives the greatest ROI, both for the planet and their pocketbook!
