Except maybe for being in the ground with a reduced carbon impact foundation- such as this foundation. For our clients Steve and Lauren, whose new home project is registered with the USGBC with the certification goal of LEED Platinum, we are using an innovative foundation system called Superior Walls. As you can see from the images the Superior Wall system uses precast foundation panels employing concrete ribs, similar to a wood framed stud wall. Using the structural principle of increased distance to the neutral axis of the stress bearing component, much like an “I” beam. Even better- this system completely eliminates the typical 10″ x 20″ concrete footing, instead using a spread gravel footing. All considered we can eliminate upwards of 70% of concrete in a foundation wall. This Is a great way to build a low-carbon, sustainable foundation. Now you know!
